Mormons will tell you that Christ was born on April 6th, the same day Joseph Smith organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, while I cannot speak of the validity of these sentiments, I can assure you however that last night at the El Club, on April 6th Glass Chimera channeled the spirit of something, much bigger than any of us, and organized a mass baptism that and immersed the masses and opened a portal of unhinged chaos into the cosmos, unearthing a deity the world has not yet seen. A celebration of the gospel that was bestowed upon this dispensation by way of the OXIMORON ep. Were they guided by the Holy Spirit to bring forth such profound teachings? Hard to say not knowing. But what I do know? It was a celebration on high and for the ages.
The night got started with Leather Beat, a fine three piece from Detroit. Playing only their second show, the dual vocal attack between the guitarist and bassist complimented the punk fury the band brought to the stage. They made you feel like you were watching a young Television gracing the stage at CBGB’s. Getting the blood pumping for the evening ahead, I dug the sound. They were fun, and showed some real punk rock prowess. The guitarist would channel some tones that would make Stevie Ray Vaughn smile, which gave the punk nature a bit of unexpected and truly authentic panache. The bassist channeled the badass attitude of Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, complimenting the guitar and creating the tight rhythm her and the drummer provided. They have some demos available on Bandcamp, and I am looking forward to catching them live again. You should stay on the lookout for more dates, and catch them. You won’t be disappointed. Follow them at Leatherbeatdetroit on Instagram and on Bandcamp.

The night got closer to activating the stargate with Toeheads, a trio of no bullshit punk rock Apostles sent to spread the teachings of the Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll ethos that are crucial to any Saturday Night Soundtrack. They wasted no time delivering their sermons with a brazen assault on the senses. The band is so tight live, bringing the same energy from the albums to the stage. No time for banter between tracks they were a full motion non stop train of utter destruction. An electrifying display of the Detroit gritty garage sound you would expect to hear round these parts. You can find them on Spotify, Bandcamp, and follow them on Instagram.

Carbon Decoy was up next, with the crowd thickening, the air getting denser, the portal was getting closer and closer to being activated. The fellas in Decoy went straight into their signature heavy doom punk, igniting the crowd into an absolute frenzy. The pit opened up and chaos ensued as they proselytized their message to the congregation, leaving everyone entranced with their on brand chaotic charisma. They get better and better Everytime I see them. Masters of their craft. Buy their new record immediately and follow them on Instagram to not miss out on any of their upcoming dates.

The club became overwhelmed with excitement as the Prophets emerged on stage, ready to deliver their cosmic chaos into the ether and break down the doors of this world into the next. There was a different atmosphere from previous gigs, it’s like they evolved from little deacons to exalted priests. The energy was unprecedented. The crowd still riding the Decoy high, it helped set the stage for the most electrifying display of sonic treachery The Order has yet to deliver. They blew the doors right off the portal to the cosmos, and set that fucker on fire. The crowd was engaged for the whole show, becoming feral as drinks were flying in the air, cracked leather and perspiration being flung in every direction while being transfixed by the sorcery on stage. Touching on their entire catalog with ferociousness, the trip was full blown magic. They announced that they will be releasing another ep later this year, which was a pleasant surprise and will be another highly anticipated release.
Glass Chimera threw one hell of a party, to celebrate the immaculate conception of OXIMORON. A lineup that was absolutely stacked. Proving yet again how mighty a force they are, manifesting a rager that was start to finish nothing but bangers. The Order are a crucial and integral part of the Detroit Scene, and need to be on everyone’s radar. They attract other bands that are just as intense and talented as them, curating a killer bill every damn time.
If you haven’t followed them yet, you need to, you gotta give OXIMORON a spin and you have got to see these guys live. They live up to and far exceed the hype. They are the real deal, and are going to continue to flourish in the Detroit ecosystem and beyond. Get to know them now, before you end up reading about them in Rolling Stone while they take over the world. Get on board now.
