The world has been graced with a no doubt abouter creamer from Detroit’s own Sonic Smut. Giving the masses a taste with a digital drop before the upcoming album release show slated for this Friday, May 3rd at Outer Limits in Hamtramck.
Sonic Smut rifles through their grandparents basement, finding stashes of vintage beaver mags, records from Mountain, Funkadelic and Jefferson Airplane, dehydrated tabs of brown acid, and a key to some interstellar mode of transportation.
What they’ve done with these findings is shaved off the bush from granddads porn, rehydrated the acid, channeled the spirits of Leslie West, Eddie Hazel, and Grace Slick, conjured up an immaculate conception with that ménage a trois and sent that love child strapped in tight to New Hope Pennsylvania circa 1991 with a can of duster and a scotch guard bong to run a Belichick on Dean and Gene Ween while they recorded “The Pod” only To come back with instructions on how to create the mind melting, adhd riddled, absolute jam fest that Smut has just dropped.
The album is brown as fuck, it’s weird in the best ways imaginable and the jams are laced with a musical acumen that defies any single genre. A thirty four minute journey that takes the listener into multiple dimensions, sultry corners of the abyss, freight trains of high end shredding, and grooves that are unrelenting. It’s jazz on biker speed, blues on heroic doses of your sisters AdderAll, classic rock on whippets and funk on medical grade lsd.
The album kicks off with a salacious tour of the Mississippi Delta on ‘Ssippi Sludge’ shooting the spirits of Corky Laing and Leslie West full of uncut ampethamines to conduct the train for the ride.
Next stop ‘smutpromtu’ is a full on spiral into a Ween approved K Hole.
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the “vanilla maggot brain fudge” track, an 11 minute monster that channels the craftsmanship of Funkadelic’s Hazel. A soothing pit stop for the record. Giving a slight reprieve from the magical chaotic road trip the record takes you on.
Turbulence hits hard with ‘The mids & the kids are outta control’ a lunging hop into a fast paced punk number that keeps your toes tapping and mind fixated on the fast approaching tracks ahead.
The album takes us through a visit to Paisley Park where Grace Slick and Primus are ready to summon the ghost of Prince, to close out the record with ‘Smutti Boy’ and the baby making worthy ‘Cosmic Kiss’
Excited for the show on Friday is an understatement, it’ll be my first time catching these cats live, and I am fucking stoked. It’s going to be a rowdy night of celebration for this masterpiece. The lineup is fully stocked with top shelf entertainment. Angel of Mars, Cherry Drop, and Edison Hollow are all tapped to bring the heat to Hamtramck to celebrate this glorious opus. Do not sleep on this record or the show. You will not be disappointed. The album is available on Spotify, but you are going to want to get your hands on the actual record. Something to roll your dope on while you spin this one. Make like Christ and feed the poor. Support your local artists.
